CareerBuilder acquired Textkernel, an Amsterdam-based company focused on AI, machine learning and semantic technology designed for matching candidates to jobs. The company said the purchase was part of a wider investment in AI and machine learning.

Careerbuilder said Textkernel’s capabilities will also help candidates quickly build personalized mobile resumes, suggest more relevant jobs based on their skills and experience and uncover patterns to help job seekers prepare for their next role.
The acquisition also strengthens CareerBuilder’s data science team by connecting more than 200 data scientists, engineers and AI specialists to work on its Hello To Hire process.
“We’ve learned that recruiters speak one language and candidates speak another. We are building and implementing technologies that close this gap for both sides of our marketplace,” said Careerbuilder CEO Irina Novoselsky.
She described the the acquisition of Textkernel and deeper investment in AI as part of an “overarching strategy to create the most advanced solutions for our customers.” The Careerbuilder and Textkernel teams have already begun working together to develop new tools, she said.
Textkernel Already Integrated
One of Careerbuilder’s priorities is streamlining an employers overall HCM technology stack. Chief Product Officer Humair Ghauri called current talent acquisition processes “cumbersome.” Fully integrating Textkernel’s technology is a “natural next step” for the company as it works to enhance its product line, he said.
Textkernel’s semantic search has already been integrated into CareerBuilder’s Talent Discovery Platform and will be included in its soon-to-be-released Talent Discovery Companion App. (Careerbuilder was a Textkernel customer before the acquisition.)
According to VentureBeat, Textkernel was founded in 2001 and employs about 120 people. It offers a multilingual resume parser and semantic search tools for software vendors, job boards, market research firms and temporary staffing agencies, and counts among its clients Monster, Manpower and Bullhorn.
